If you’re just tuning in we’re in the midst of a blog conference focusing on the topic of work and family.
On Monday, I focused on general issues related to parenthood and work. The posts and discussion were about the hard and unappreciated work of parenting, different views on childcare, how parenting is harder than in the past, desires formore time at work and with kids, the necessity of two incomes, and parents in the business world.
On Tuesday, I focused on the problems of academics and family life. Posts and discussion covered the topics of the obstacles that I faced as a parent, the experiences of others, how nonparents also find academia incompatible with a personal life, academia versus other professions, and examples and proposals for good family policies in academia.
Wednesday, we discussed the whether women bear an unfair burden of the home/family responsibilities, the views of the childless on the complaints of parents, and whether there is any truth to the mommy wars.
Thursday, we discussed whether feminists have neglected the mothers, the value of work and career, proposals and roadblocks for change, the role of, the choice to have kids, the role of race and class.
Friday was about why caring for others is worth all these hassles. And a few final words.
I urge you to look at the comments and your own two cents. The thoughtful and balanced comments are making this conference worthwhile. It’s due to their hardwork that we’ve gotten 6,500 page views since Monday. Thanks to everyone for participating.
